Blessed those who keep his testimonies, who seek him with all their heart. Psalms 119:2 NABRE
Psalm 119 is a long psalm that can be used as a mediation on the Word of God. It opens with wisdom verses similar to Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount. “Blessed are those whose way is blameless, who walk in the law of the Lord! Blessed are those who keep his testimonies, who seek him with all their heart, who do no wrong, but walk in his ways!” After speaking his word through Moses and the prophets, God has spoken definitively through Jesus Christ. Christ Himself is the Word of God made flesh and His person and His works, His teaching and His death and resurrection are the eternal Word of God addressed to all, which brings light and liberty. If we want to have a happy life (blessed is happy in the biblical speak) we should follow the ways of the Lord, we should be attentive to the Word of God, we should seek the Word with all our heart and soul and live the example of Jesus.
We have become a post-Christian nation, meaning we have heard about Jesus and know bible stories and we have decided we (a majority of us) don’t believe. It seems unlikely this could be so, as God does not make following very difficult, and in fact following God brings much happiness and joy. It could be why we seem less joyful as a nation. Our religion seems to be politics and our politics is very self-centered. The message of Psalm 119 is follow a path that God sets and you will be happy, you will have peace and so much more. I hope you have experienced this and I hope you share your experiences. Followers of Jesus need to live in such a way that others see our joy filled life and want to follow too. The beauty of your life should attract others to want a life like yours.
Do you follow the teachings of Jesus? Can you be more of an example for others?
