Therefore, my beloved brothers, be firm, steadfast, always fully devoted to the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain. 1 Corinthians 15:58 NABRE
Paul’s letter to the Corinthians is a broad view of early Christian life. Paul founded the community and tries to guide them like a father his children. This letter addresses several difficulties in the community. Paul’s response addresses what is best for the overall community and in keeping with the gospel message. Several of the issues are struggles between life committed to the gospel and an influence of the outside culture. After addressing particular issues Paul reinforces the gospel message, particularly Christ death and resurrection. He asks, if Christ is not raised then our preaching and faith are empty. Why be baptized, why face death and persecution daily if there is no resurrection? In fact Christ did rise and they (we) will also. Be firm, steadfast and dedicated to the work of the Lord. With the Lord your work is never in vain. Be centered on the Lord, don’t lose your way in cultural distractions. We are the instruments to lead others to Jesus. Finding Jesus makes life better. The Corinthians first came to Jesus because their life got better. It is a lack of determination to fight off the influence of culture that challenges faith.
Are events in your life pulling you from faith? Does the cultural influence challenge your belief? It is sometimes difficult to recognize culture’s influence in the church. We have many moral weaknesses in culture that have slipped into church life. Gossip is one that comes to mind. We must listen to Paul’s letter today. Devote yourself to the Lord, not the success model of culture. Influence and change hearts. Jesus is best for all!
Add to your daily routine to strengthen your belief. Block cultural influences from making a way in your life.
