Many are the plans of the human heart, but it is the decision of the LORD that endures. Proverbs 19:21 NABRE
The proverb quoted today is from a section of proverbs titled, “the proverbs of Solomon.” Solomon was known for his wisdom. God promised to give Solomon whatever he asked; he asked for wisdom. These proverbs are unconnected, wise sayings, which are wise. We wake each day, each week, month after month with plans. Today we wake early, exercise, rush to work, stop for coffee entering the office where we have our day scheduled. We have a one-year plan; after returning from vacation we’ll learn some leadership lessons and pursue a promotion. Or maybe this is the year we start our family, we get ready to be pregnant and create a nursery. The plans of the human heart can be beautiful. But the prophet indicates our plan will only happen if God makes the decision to help. It is God’s decisions that endure, that are fulfilled. We don’t always know the why of God’s planning and many times we think we are not being considered in God’s decisions. But, God has a plan for humanity that is best and will be fulfilled. One of the best examples is Paul. He began his biblical journey as Saul of Tarsus, a rabbi working diligently to arrest the members of this new Christian cult. But God wanted Paul to change direction and become the apostle of gentile Christians. Paul worked God’s plan unceasingly.
A life of planning that doesn’t include God may be fool hearty. Make your plans with God at the forefront. Be like Paul and serve in God’s plan. Including God will lead to a life with direction and satisfaction. @Andy_Stanley has been preaching a wise message series, “The Beginners Guide to Predicting your Future,” see here. It is definitely worth a look.
