For freedom Christ set us free; so stand firm and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery. Galatians 5:1 NABRE
Paul makes clear the status of a follower of Christ is freedom. Christ sets us free in every way, in all aspects of life. Paul launches into a conversation about the law and circumcision and the freedom from these things and scholars interpret Paul’s meaning as we are no longer slaves under any law, we are free from all ritual and doctrinal following and available to just live in Christ through love. I think of the freedom of Christ taking us even further, we are no longer slaves in any aspect of our life. We have gained our freedom but often put ourselves into slavery; we are slaves to our work, our properties, our family, our things, always concerned we could lose what we have. Christ teaches detachment, we should not hold on to worldly attachments with no meaning, they will be gone soon enough anyway. Rather embrace the freedom to be free, to go where we want, to live as we want, to love as we are able.
As children of God, we are most important, and we are held in the hands of God, God will always bring us to the best place, this is through freedom, attachments will hold us back. Christ has conferred existence upon us and true freedom brings us to a higher spiritual place. We need nothing but God in this place, we see God and know we have freedom. Our humanity brings us back to earth often, but we need to be reminded of this freedom, and how we can be a soul living free. Don’t let anything make you a slave, freedom is the most valuable aspect of who we are and should be at the center of who we are, each moment of each day.
How do you experience freedom? What are your attachments?
