For the wisdom of this world is foolishness in the eyes of God, for it is written: “He catches the wise in their own ruses,” 1 Corinthians 3:19 NABRE
Paul recognizes there are two views, the way the world sees things and the way God sees things. In the world we measure wise people by intelligence, success, an ability to convince and lead people and even something we call street smarts, an ability to survive with just common sense and a willingness to be deceptive. God does not necessarily see wisdom the same way as people in the world. Wisdom in the world is very individualistic where God sees everything as one. For God, wisdom in unity has more value, not so much how do I succeed but how do we succeed, not how can I advance but how do we advance. It may be great for one person to do well if you are that person but ultimately if all around you is failing it will impact your success. Individual wisdom is weighed down by all that surrounds.
God desires that those who believe themselves wise stop and reevaluate. We can see those considered foolish surprising us with their love and compassion, leaving us with a feeling of importance. We are wise in the eyes of God when we lift others up, we make them feel wise and let them know they are valuable to us and to the community. The wisdom of God is in the valuing of all beings and knowing it is in communion that true wisdom is evident. Unite with others and be wise in the eyes of God.
Do you consider yourself wise? How do you view the wisdom of God?
