Jeremiah is prophesying Israel will relive its experiences of earlier times, when they enjoyed the love and protection of God, their father, their shepherd, as they made their way through the wilderness to the promised land. The people will enjoy a happy return from exile and their restoration to a place of honor as well as the rebuilding of the holy city is assured by God. The people will return home rejoicing at the goodness of God while He will continue to shower them in blessings. In these passages God reveals himself as “a father to Israel” and “shepherd” to His flock; for He is faithful to the love He has for them. The Lord loves Israel with the love of a special choosing, much like the love of spouses; He pardons their sin and even their infidelities and betrayals. Finding repentance and true conversion He brings the people back to grace. It is God’s love that is His most powerful gift, because it is love which convinces a beloved to be faithful and respond with love.
God’s shows special choosing for the people of Israel, they are the first to be a model and witness of God’s love. God shows them love and mercy again and again and it is told to us through these stories. Through the mystery of creation God has this love for every being, including every member of the human family. Jeremiah records God’s word, “With age-old love I have loved you; so I have kept my mercy toward you.” (Jeremiah 31:3)
