Jesus enters Jerusalem for the last time during the Feast of the Passover. He enters riding a donkey, an indication of a peaceful entry, as opposed to war horses. Kings ride a donkey when they are coming in peace, so Jesus is also indicating his Kingship, bringing peace to the city, but actually He brings peace to the entire world. The people greet Him waving palms, echoing the entry of the Maccabees into Jerusalem following their triumph over the Seleucids. The people know Jesus is special and look to Him as their Messiah, proclaiming Hosanna (save us now.) Jesus has done so much at this point in time the people are sure He has been sent by God. In many ways they look to Him to save them from oppression, but by the end of the week He goes from being their King to crucifixion. As He enters there are those who complain about the crowds and the cheering and asked Jesus to have the people rebuked. Jesus responds if the people are quiet the stones will cry out.
Christ is said by Paul to have all things created for Him and by Him (see Colossians 1:16) and it seems many things are aware of His role in creation. Even the stones know He is there for them and praise Christ in their own manner. So much of the world, living and present, is specifically placed here by the One who created it all. The world will be created anew, joined by a new heaven and so all we see and know will continue into eternal life. Even stones will exist in the kingdom of God and they are smart enough to know that Christ formed them specifically with a purpose and they are grateful.
