But Abraham replied, “They have Moses and the prophets. Let them listen to them.” Luke 16:29 NABRE
Jesus tells a parable of a rich and poor man, both die and are viewed differently after death. The poor man is carried alongside Abraham, the father of faith, while the rich man is in the netherworld, torremented. The rich man can look across a chasm and see Abraham and the poor man together and calls out to them asking for help. He needs just a dip of water to cool him, but Abraham kindly refuses because of the chasm. The man then asks Abraham if he will send someone to his family so they can be warned and not end up in the chasm. Abraham responds they have all they need in Moses and the prophets, if they don’t listen to them they will not listen to someone returning from the dead.
Abrahams’s response is interesting because followers of Christ tend to point to Christ’s death and resurrection as the pivotal convincing action providing people of faith with their faith, yet it is still controversial. After His resurrection Jesus doesn’t appear to everyone in the world, He appears only to those who know Him, scripture might write less than five hundred people witness Jesus alive after the resurrection. Certainly if God wants us to have confidence in resurrection it would be helpful if everyone see a person risen. Jesus responds to this question without being asked; even if we see someone rise from the dead; witnessing this rising will not persuade us. If we want to be persuaded it is through the witness of those who lived and listened to God, doing God’s will. Miracles and resurrection will not on their own be convincing. Listen to the message of God through the journey of humanity and believe.
Does rising from the dead help you have faith? Are you able to be transformed through the Word?
