He said, “The Son of Man must suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed and on the third day be raised.” Luke 9:22 NABRE
Jesus asks His disciples who people say He is and then asks then who do they say He is. Peter responds, “The Messiah of God.” Jesus doesn’t want them repeating it but doesn’t deny it, in fact He continues by declaring He must suffer and be rejected by the religious leaders. He will be killed and on the third day will rise again. This is the first time any human announces Jesus as the Messiah, the truth has been announced by an angel, revealed to Simeon and known by demons. His disciples will see this as great hope. The Messiah, meaning, anointed one, is to be God’s raised up leader of Israel, the Messiah will restore Israel, overthrow or convert Gentiles, renew temple worship and bring an era of peace and righteousness. Every Jew would hope for the Messiah to come in their lifetime, it would be a renewal they believed would take them from slavery to freedom and glory. The Messiah would restore Israel and make them the one other’s look toward to know God. Jesus however begins to tear down their image of the Messiah. In Jesus’ view the Messiah suffers and is rejected, and not by outsiders but by the leaders of the Temple community. To make it even more unimaginable Jesus declares the Messiah will be killed. He does provide hope declaring three days after dying the Messiah will rise again.
Jesus description of the events that occur to end the Messiah’s life likely didn’t register with his disciples. After all why would God send a Messiah who could be put to death by the very people He has come to restore? It is not a hero story in the human mind.
Why does God send a Messiah to die? What message are we to take away from this line from Jesus?
