He said to them, “Today this scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.” Luke 4:21 NABRE
Jesus visits the town where He grew up, and enters the Synagogue. It is common for someone to ask for the scriptural scrolls and read from them. Jesus is seen reading from the prophet Isaiah. The passage He reads speaks about a messenger to come who is the servant of the Lord. Christians hold this to be Jesus announcing the coming of the Messiah, a few verses that prophecy a messenger who will bring good news and freedom, a message of hope. It is a message all Jews would know and be waiting to see fulfilled. Jesus claims the message is fulfilled in their hearing. Those listening are meeting the messenger, the anointed one, the Christ. It is Jesus declaring the Messiah has arrived and there is a new hope and a new salvation. Jesus is telling the people the time of waiting is over, the fulfillment of God’s promise is at hand. God’s blessing is available to the people and to us today. Anyone hearing this message should consider themselves blessed for seeing Jesus with their “eyes” and hearing Him with their ears. But the people of Nazareth do not take heed.
It would seem just making the announcement should be a reason to rejoice. In the prophecy the news is good, glad tidings to the poor, liberty to captives, sight to the blind, and the oppressed go free. For the most part humanity has moved this way; we recognize the poor and seek to help, liberty is the mantra of the world, people are waking up to see through a moral view and oppressed people are constantly being lifted and supported. Much is still to be done but Jesus has changed the world. Christian’s recognize His message is still in its infancy, we hope for much more progress in the future.
Do you see a hopeful future? How do you contribute to Jesus message?
Humanity has moved in a direction of good; we recognize the poor and seek to help, liberty is the mantra of the world, people are waking up to see through a moral view and oppressed people are constantly being lifted and supported.
