Simon Peter said in reply, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” Matthew 16:16 NABRE
Jesus has taken His disciples to a Roman territory and asks them who the people think He is. They give various responses and then Peter replies with the quoted verse. The Jews are waiting for a Messiah, many are still waiting. There is not much mention of Messiah specifically in the Hebrew Scriptures, often we read Prince or David as servant in the place where mention of the Messiah is expected, particularly in places addressing restoration. This is the hope of the Messiah to restore the people, the Messiah will bring the end to sin, everyone will know and understand Messiah as Anointed Prince. Many think the Messiah will be King, Priest and Prophet and all who are waiting for the Messiah will return becoming fully one nation, a light onto the world. The Messiah will rebuild the temple, bring an end to all war so we all live in peace, unite all nations, bring a true awareness of God and signal the end of the world as we know it. Peter is a simple fisherman and though like every Jew he is waiting for the Messiah, Peter would depend on religious leaders to point out the One who is the Messiah. Or, as Jesus says following Peter’s announcement, it is our Heavenly Father who has inspired Peter to make this announcement.
The coming of the Messiah is meant to change everything, those still waiting expect immediate change, the entire world changed in an instant. Christians see it as their task to spread the word of Jesus as the Messiah to convince people to step away from sinful ways and through love create a new Garden of Eden for all. We only have so much time, Jesus prophesized a Second Coming ushering in the Kingdom. We must work together to create it from what we know.
Do you believe Jesus changed everything? Are you working for a better world?
