She said, “If I but touch his clothes, I shall be cured.” Mark 5:28 NABRE
Mark tells the story of a woman who has an affliction, lasting twelve years and no physician has helped. Because of the affliction she is ritually impure and unable to participate in Jewish feast at the temple. All of her physical issues are unknown but clearly this is a major problem in her life. She appears alone, seeing Jesus pass in a large crowd, Mark gives us her inner thought, if she can simply touch Jesus she will be healed. The word of Jesus healing power has given her hope where she has had no hope. When she touches Jesus clothing, with the faith of a believer, she is cured immediately. But she learns Jesus is also aware of what has happened and He looks for her, wanting to know who has touched Him. Jesus desires more than a touch, He wants a real connection. She recognizes Jesus is looking for her and turns and explains what she has done, including the back story that Mark has included in the text. This second approach toward Jesus has her in “fear and trembling” an indication she is now fully aware of the mighty deeds of God enacted through Jesus. She even pays Jesus homage, like one honoring a royal. Although afraid and expecting to be reprimanded for her touching of Jesus an act which makes Him ritually unclean, she kneels in awe before Him. Jesus of course doesn’t reprimand her, He compliments her for her faith and the connection has been completed, He and she have become family as He refers to her as daughter.
Jesus always wants to know those who have faith in Him. He wants to acknowledge our faith and assure us we are healed and through faith we have salvation and peace, a peace that allows us to enter the inner sanctuary of God.
Do we have the faith of this woman? Are our needs for healing desperate?
