“Pay attention to what I am telling you. The Son of Man is to be handed over to men.” Luke 9:44 NABRE
Jesus meets a large crowd after a time of private prayer. A father asks Jesus to cure his son, something His disciples could not do although Jesus has given the Twelve power over demons. Jesus understands their faith is not strong and they still need training. Jesus rebukes the demon and returns the healed son to the father. All were amazed, including the disciples and it is at this point Jesus tells them to pay attention. He wants them to get into their ears what He is about to say to them, it is a predication of His passion. Jesus tells them a number of times He will be killed and rise again. The disciples don’t understand what Jesus is saying but are afraid to ask Him about the meaning. Jesus’ words remind us of the Suffering Servant song from Isaiah (see 52:13–53:12) We read “on account of their sins he was handed over” (Isaiah 53:12.) This passion prediction and one previous set the stage for what will be Jesus long journey to Jerusalem toward his death at the hands of the religious leadership and the Easter event on the Sunday following Good Friday. Jesus knows what His future will hold but He doesn’t ever seem to get the message across to those closest to Him. Even as the events occur we see most of the Twelve scatter in unbelief. They know powerful Jesus, Jesus who can perform miracles and speak to anyone and walk away free. But now they see Him arrested and put to death, it is impossible to understand. Jesus tries to prepare them but somehow the actual events are too incomprehensible.
We may not always understand the message of Jesus, but we should have faith, trust and know all will be well. Following Jesus is hard but rewarding.
How do you receive Jesus’ message? Do you apply faith to what you hear?
