He said to them, “Why are you terrified, O you of little faith?” Then he got up, rebuked the winds and the sea, and there was great calm. Matthew 8:26 NABRE
Many are following Jesus because He performs healing miracles. In order to move away from those so needy, He and the disciples travel across the Sea of Galilee. During the journey a violent storm arises, a storm that has been described as an earthquake and put great fear in these fishermen followers. We may think of the end of times, a shaking of the old world when God brings His Kingdom. The disciples turn to Jesus who is asleep and ask Him to save them. Jesus first reaction is to question their faith, so small and lacking trust in God. Jesus rebukes the wind, a comparison to early miracles where Jesus rebukes evil spirits and they flee. Now rebuking the wind, Jesus shows His power over the created things of the world. We read from Paul all things are created through Jesus (see Colossians 1:16) and this event shows His creative power with authority over the wind, a powerful wind that made all except Jesus afraid. Immediately a great calm comes over the sea, and the men who had such great fear just moments before Jesus’ action. This miracle is most impressive to the men that have been following Jesus. Although they had seen many healings and miracles, it is this rebuking of the wind that leads them to ask what sort of man is Jesus.
Faith is the means by which we show our trust in God and Jesus. The story of the calming of the sea has tones of an end of times event. Perhaps it is a story that is meant to have us look forward to our death or the end of the world, so we may think about how we will respond. If we have faith, live as a follower of Jesus, seeking the will of God, we will be calm.
What would Jesus say about your faith? How do you see your future?
If we look forward to our death or the end of the world, how do we think we will respond. If we have faith, live as a follower of Jesus, seeking the will of God, we will be calm.
