Honor your father and your mother, that you may have a long life in the land the LORD your God is giving you. Exodus 20:12 NABRE
We read in the quoted verse one of the Ten Commandments, called “Decalogue”, coming from the Greek, meaning “ten words.” This command is the fourth of the Ten Commandments. These commandments are instructions from God to Moses for the Hebrew people journeying in the desert as they escaped from slavery in Egypt on their way to the Promised Land. The first three commandments relate to God; naming God, declaring God as the sole god, and adoring only God, no substitutions. The fourth commandment begins seven commands that deal with inter-personal relationships. When Jesus spoke about the commandments He constructed an easy method to follow these commands; the first three can be covered with our love of God and the remaining seven can be covered with love others. In following these two instructions of Jesus we are able to include all the instructions of the Decalogue. This fourth commandment coming immediately after the precepts about God gives it a certain importance. We can think about parents representing God within the family and they should be given the same respect and honor that is given to God, parent of all humanity. This commandment is not only intended for young children but adult children have a duty to obey their parents. The promise is for a long life, in a land given by God, a promise of a good land for a good life.
Family is an important structure in society, based on love and caring that models how we must live in culture. God intends an importance of family, instructing us to remember the authority of parents, which reminds us of God’s authority. We must be led, it begins with God and then parents.
Do you honor you parents? What have you learned from your parents?
