Matthew 5:5 – March 2, 2020

Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the land. Matthew 5:5 NABRE

Jesus is teaching what has been referred to as the “Sermon on the Mount.” He wants His disciples to know the way to the best life. He starts with a teaching called the “beatitudes,” meaning blessings or happy. Jesus teaches if we follow these instructions it will make life better and make us better at life. The quoted verse is the third blessing, we are encouraged to be meek. Jesus does not equate being meek with being weak. This blessing is linked to hope. We are meek when we have accepted a certain humbleness, retaining hope and understanding that we have limitations, helplessness and frailty. Having hope implies we have experienced failures, we know there are things we cannot do on our own, we recognize we cannot cope alone and we accept Jesus more profoundly as our Savior. Meekness is a state or predisposition and it is a fruit of hope. Being meek is in opposition to our domination ego. We must have a heart that is free and open to God filling it, therefore we must be detached from many things, including our self-will, and our sometimes very subtle desire to dominate, or be the boss, to have influence or impose ourselves. Ultimately meekness is a gift from God, no one is meek by nature. In old age we see the blessing of meekness come into play more and more, we are taken more and more where we did not intend to go.  Jesus tells us, “learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart;” (Matthew 11:29)

When meek we become heirs. God wants us to be children who inherit from our Father. If we are meek we allow God to fill our heart and God provides us riches that are as abundant as all the land of the world. We inherit from God when we first give our heart.

Do you have hope? Do you subdue your ego?

God wants us to be children who inherit from our Father. If we are meek we allow God to fill our heart and God provides us riches that are as abundant as all the land of the world. Click To Tweet
