a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel. Luke 2:32 NABRE
Luke is telling the sorry of Jesus presentation to the Lord as required by Hebrew law. Mary, Joseph and Jesus (as a baby) are going to the temple. Jesus as the first born son and will be presented to God and consecrated. This is a fulfilling of the scriptures, (see Exodus 13:2, 12-15 and Numbers 18:15) by law all first born sons of the Jews were consecrated to God as thanksgiving and reminder of how God brought the Jews out of Egypt. The Pharaoh would not hear the Lord and so the Egyptians lost their first born son and beast. Presenting their son to God they were met by a righteous man, who is awaiting consolation of Israel, the prophecies of Isaiah. The Holy Spirit has guided him and he is told he will not see death until he sees the coming of the Messiah. Meeting the child Jesus he realizes that “now” is the time of fulfillment. Simeon took Jesus into his arms and blessed God. Simeon then begins to proclaim the message of restoration, including the quoted verse, “a light for the revelation to the Gentiles, and glory of your people Israel.” (see Isaiah 42:6 and 49:6) Simeon is proclaiming that the restoration of Israel will bring knowledge of Israel’s God to the rest of the earth!
Of course Simeon is simply proclaiming what he knows from the Prophet Isaiah who proclaimed this prophecy over eight hundred years before hand. Simeon is acknowledging that the time is now when this restoration is at hand. For us today we are able to see it is Jesus the Messiah who leads all of us to God. Jesus’ presence is the fulfillment of God’s plan began way back when God decided to call Abraham and make him a nation that would lead to the restoration of humanity with God.
Can you see God’s plan slowly taking form? Do you realize God always wanted you?
