Hosanna! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Blessed is the kingdom of our father David that is to come! Hosanna in the highest! Mark 11:10-11 NABRE
Mark is describing the scene as Jesus enters the city of Jerusalem for the Passover at which He will be arrested, and crucified. The scene Mark describes is a celebration, Jesus comes into the city riding a donkey like a king in peace time. He is greeted with crowds who are cheering Him and glorifying Him as if he is the promised Messiah. They lay their cloaks and palms in the pathway to keep Him clean and sing praises to His entry. We could hear the quoted verse, Hosanna … Hosanna in the highest. It comes from Psalm 118 which is a psalm of praise for the king’s victory. The people trusted in the Lord and they were delivered a victory in battle, it speaks to what can happen if we trust in the Lord. It is an important psalm for the Jewish people, one proclaimed at every reenactment of the Passover. It is a psalm fulfilled by the triumphant entry of Jesus into the Holy City. The quoted verse is a blessing from the priest and a singing of gratitude in response. Hosanna is an expression of adoration, it is a call for saving. The people think of Jesus as a king who will come to save them. They look forward to freedom and His reign. Of course this triumphant entry turns to crucifixion by the end of the week and the people moving away from Jesus and looking for another to be their Messiah.
Jesus entry shows how people are like sheep without a shepherd, easily swayed by anyone shouting the loudest or with the most confidence. Jesus public ministry led to His being called savior as He entered the city. The religious leaders feared his popularity and led the people to want to crucify Jesus. Today, we must stand trusting Jesus our shepherd.
Do you follow Jesus? Do you trust Him?
Jesus entry into Jerusalem shows how people are like sheep without a shepherd, easily swayed by anyone shouting the loudest or with the most confidence. One day he is king the next criminal to be crucified.
