Therefore whatever you have said in the darkness will be heard in the light, and what you have whispered behind closed doors will be proclaimed on the housetops. Luke 12:3 NABRE
Jesus opens chapter twelve speaking about the hypocrisy of the religious leaders called Pharisees. They are hypocrites because they act upright but inside they are full of evil. They are quick to point out others faults but they don’t see their own. Jesus compares this to leaven, just a little can affect the entire lump of dough. Jesus indicates the Pharisees are a corrupting influence, they are poor leaders. Jesus teaches disciples how to be genuine followers and good leaders, so they become a positive leaven and positive influence as well as coworkers for the kingdom. Jesus indicates no one will get away with hypocrisy. He shares that hypocrisy will be seen, and people will know who are the weak in this regard. The spread of God’s word from the believer’s needs to be shared from the heart. Jesus is indicating anything that is said will be discovered, so if you don’t believe in your heart you must work toward belief. Those who speak well of the message but don’t really believe will be found to be hypocrites.
A way to show belief is to live the message. Speak kindly of others and hold your tongue. Many times we can discover friends or other Christians speaking of a situation that wasn’t quite right. Someone cut them off in traffic, or shopping for groceries. While they may have held their tongue in the moment they are emotional and share what happened; with friends, family and maybe even social media. This bashing of others after the fact is not what a Christian should do, a believer would offer the other cheek, walk the extra mile or give a sweater.
Do you speak of others behind their back? Do you denigrate someone to your friends?
