Thus faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the word of Christ. Romans 10:17 NABRE
In the section of the letter to the Romans with the quoted verse Paul is using Hebrew scripture to challenge the people of Israel, Jews, who are not accepting Christ as the Messiah. He quotes from a passage of Isaiah the prophet which speaks of a suffering servant that the people feel could be the coming Messiah. “Lord, who has believed what was heard from us?” (Romans 10:16 and Isaiah 53:1) Quoting this verse Paul hopes to challenge the Jews into remembering that they have ignored proclamations in the past as a covenant people. That the word has gone out and fallen on deaf ears. Paul wants his own people to be part of the movement of Christ, and so reminds them that hearing is an important part of believing. If we want to have faith we must first hear. Paul in using the quote from Isaiah wants to remind the Jews of the story of a Suffering Servant an innocent who will be accused, abused and despised by his own people. This seems to be how God will allow the events to occur. This reminder should bring the whole story into mind for the Jews and should help them see Christ as this servant and the promised Messiah. Paul continues that what is heard is about Christ and comes through the scriptures and so should be believed.
How often have we heard the words of scripture and had a casual attitude about what is being spoken. Do we take serious the word of God, and use the scriptures to change our lives. We could be making the same mistake as the Jews in the early Christian movement so that we are not part of something important, or doing what it takes to make our life fulfilled. Hear the word of God and believe.
Have you let the word of God fall on deaf ears? Are you missing opportunity being casual in the word?
