The Lord’s acts of mercy are not exhausted, his compassion is not spent; They are renewed each morning; great is your faithfulness! Lamentations 3:22-23 NABRE
The book of Lamentation is five poems that describe anguish over the destruction of Jerusalem during the siege by the Babylonians and final destruction in 587 BC. The people never thought that the city would fall, but God uses the destruction and enslavement of the people as a message for their unfaithfulness. In chapter three of the book we read the words of a suffering person who feels abandoned and besieged by God. He is beat@en, crushed bones, broken, placed in poverty, left in the dark, stuck in places without escape, flesh torn, a laughingstock, a life deprived of peace and happiness long forgotten, even when he cries for help his prayer is not answered. Eventually the bemoaning changes direction and the author says the Lord’s mercy is not exhausted, His compassion not spent. Eventually God ends the suffering and turns back to the suffering people and even sends them help to be freed from their enslavement. The author knows that God renews His mercy and is always faithful to his people. So even though everything might seem dismal and hopeless God will never completely abandon His people.
The history of God with the people of Israel is something we should keep in mind. We may be unfaithful to God, or we may turn from God in times of suffering or bad luck, but God will never abandon us, or take away His favor from us who are His children. Jesus created a relationship between God and us and with this relationship formed through a lifetime of care and attention we can depend on God’s help when we call on Him.
Do you turn to God in need? Have you had moments when you felt God was not present in your life?
