But seek first the kingdom [of God] and his righteousness, and all these things will be given you besides. Matthew 6:33 NABRE
One of the first teachings from Jesus is His “Sermon on the Mount.” It is a long teaching on how to live so that life is full and God can take care of us. The quoted verse is part of that teaching. The verse is in a section that recommends storing treasure in heaven where it will last. Jesus mentions worry several times in this section. He expresses we have excessive concern and anxiety monopolizes our hearts attention. Jesus tells us not to worry about our life or about our body and list specific areas where we are usually concerned: eating, drinking and clothing. While these are important they are not the ultimate goal of life. Thus we should look after these basic needs but focus on what is more important. God provides for the birds of the air and the flowers in the field and if God cares for these how much more He will care for His children’s basic needs. Then Jesus closes this section by exhorting that we seek first the kingdom of God and work toward being righteous in the eyes of God and we will receive these things and everything else besides. God’s will should be the top priority in our lives. We must desire that God’s kingdom be fully accepted on earth and seek to obey His will in our lives. Jesus assures that if we put God’s kingdom first, God will care for all our earthly necessities as well.
Jesus teaches us that we should trust God, work for God’s kingdom on earth and seek God’s will in all things and the things that we worry about under normal circumstances will be taken care of for us. It you want a worry free life, than doing God’s will is the way to live.
Do you worry about many things? Could God help you unload your worries?
