Behold, the eye of the LORD is upon those who fear him, upon those who count on his mercy, Psalms 33:18 NABRE
Psalm 33 is a psalm of praise to God who sees everyone and watches over those who fear Him, as He has promised. The psalm begins with an invitation to praise the Lord; it goes on to outline why He should be praised; and it ends with the people proclaiming they trust in the Lord. The reasons given for this praise are; above everything else, God’s faithfulness and steadfast love; then His great power as manifested in creation, then His choice of Israel; and finally His providential care for all. Christians reading this psalm add praise to God for not only what is said in the psalm but more fervently still for the revelation through Jesus Christ. The quoted verse declares those who fear the Lord have God watching over them constantly and they can count on His mercy. To fear the Lord means to respect Him and in the end God saves their lives eternally. It is mercy that God wants to give and mercy we depend on to be made righteous with God. In all it is God’s giving that saves us, there is nothing we can do from our side to earn God’s grace.
We learn from the psalm that it is God who watches over the faithful. With God’s steadfast concern and watchfulness anyone who trusts and believes will have life to the fullest. As followers we always have recourse to the Lord. The psalm is a prayer that trusts in the Lord who is near to those who respect Him. God is a God who gives, even when it would seem we are not worthy of the gift.
Do you respect the Lord and trust in His watchfulness. Do you depend on God’s mercy?
