Charm is deceptive and beauty fleeting; the woman who fears the LORD is to be praised. Proverbs 31:30 NABRE
The book of Proverbs closes with a beautiful writing on the qualities of the perfect wife. Written with a rural family in ancient Israel in mind much is true today. Proverb’s prologue describes Wisdom as a woman and invites everyone to a banquet at her house. The closing reveals the moral strength of woman, she is strong because she is aware she is trusted, by her husband, and by God who entrusts the human being to her. Even though there is social discrimination, she still does well. Which speaks of the dignity of woman that God Himself provides to her, making her strong and strengthening her vocation. The “perfect woman” becomes an irreplaceable support and source of spiritual strength, the energies of her spirit are revealed. This “perfect woman” is owed much by her families and even possibly entire nations. We can read; she opens her mouth with wisdom, her children raise up and call her blessed, she opens her hands to the poor and needy. The quoted verse reveals superficial things are short lived, but a woman who fears (respects) the LORD is to be praised. A good woman realizes she has been trusted with much and relies on the LORD to help guide and keep her strong. A good woman is far more precious than jewels.
Yesterday, we recognized Mother’s with a day that calls out motherhood. But it is all women that God entrusts with life and wisdom. Though many women don’t receive the highest place in society, they keep their focus and bring about works of praise. Our mothers, our wives, our sisters deserve high praise and in this prayer of Proverbs this is recognized by Wisdom who is with God.
Do you know the wisdom of a “perfect woman”? Is there women in your life who you owe thanks and have you thanked them?
