He himself bore our sins in his body upon the cross, so that, free from sin, we might live for righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed. 1 Peter 2:24 NABRE
Peter wrote this letter to five communities in the Roman province of Asia Minor. Peter speaks about suffering quite often in this letter so it is likely these communities are going through trials and sufferings. In the part of the letter with the quoted verse Peter holds up Christ as an example of how to bear suffering. Although Christ suffered, He committed no sin nor did he speak deceitfully. When insulted he returned no insult, when he suffered he did not seek revenge, in fact he handed himself over to be judged. Jesus bore our sins in his body upon the cross, freeing us from sin so we might receive righteousness. We are burdened with sin but Christ took our sin, he suffered and we benefited. We have been given the opportunity to live a life like Christ because Christ took away the weight of sin. We can live a righteousness, in other words holiness and do good according to the gospels. Jesus is our Redeemer. He died held to the cross by nails, and His love for us. In death heaven rejoices as Jesus brings all the souls that have been in death to life. It is a party like none ever.
But death did not hold Jesus. He shows us the way of God by living again, glorified and praised as the first to be returned to life never to die again. It is a remarkable event, one that changed the world but more importantly changed destiny for every person born. The path Jesus shows is a path open to us. Live your life knowing whatever you do will have an impact here and forever. He is risen, Alleluia, Alleluia.
Do you recognize your personal story in the Easter story? Can you live your life as though it will go on into eternity?
