Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is God from of old, creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary, and his knowledge is beyond scrutiny. Isaiah 40:28 NABRE
The Hebrew people have been taken captive after the destruction of Jerusalem by the Babylonians in 587-586 BC. Babylon was defeated by Persia and their King, Cyrus issued a decree allowing the Hebrews to return home. It was around 539 BC, almost fifty years later. As the Hebrews were leaving Babylon to return to Jerusalem they have a long exodus ahead of them. As the journey begins the voice of the prophet tries to boost their morale telling them it will not be a long and difficult journey. They will see evidence of the power of God. They begin filled with hope. The prophet continues to speak of the greatness of God and encourage the people. But instead of praising the Lord the nation is complaining to Him that He acted as though He did not know their situation or have any concern for their problems. Instead of seeing the freedom they received and the open path to return they see a long road before them, and they complain they do not have enough strength for the journey. Saying God is asking them to do the impossible. But God knows how we feel and what we fear. God is sure to meet our every need. Often we don’t completely obey God, but despite ourselves we can trust that God will never let us down. God will always give us the strength and courage for the task.
We should never think God does not know what we are going through or what difficulties we are having. God came and entered into humanity to share in the difficult and wonderful tasks of our lives. Trust that God wants to do all He can to be sure we are successful. God knows what we need for success.
Do you trust God? Do you surrender your complaining for the hope of God?
