Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, [then] I will enter his house and dine with him, and he with me. Revelation 3:20 NABRE
In a mystical image Jesus presents Himself to a church in Laodicea. It is a church of followers who are lukewarm for Christ and this disappoints Jesus. He says he will spit them out of his mouth, a translation that conjures up vomit. Jesus is saying this church literally makes him sick. They think they are rich and affluent of their own doing and there is an impression that they feel they don’t really need Jesus, they are fine on their own. Jesus tells them what they have is nothing compared to what he could give them, they should beg Him to buy His gold and white robes. Although Jesus speaks harshly of the church, He is very patient. He keeps trying, He stands at the door and knocks, and if just one person hears Him and opens the door he will dine with them and they with Him. To dine together is a sign of intimacy. It represents a relationship of trust and friendship. It reminds us of the Last Passover meal Jesus hosted with His disciples and defined the new covenant. It is an incredible showing of mercy and love. A church that makes him sick can still be redeemed if they ask. Our God will do anything to find the lost and motivate the lukewarm follower. It is a beautiful description of Jesus who will wait until we are ready and when we open up and let Him in, He will enter fully into communion with us.
