Do not let your hearts be troubled. You have faith in God; have faith also in me. John 14:1 NABRE
This section of the Gospel of John is nearing the end of Jesus life. He is spending time with his disciples and sharing many thoughts and His prayers for them. They are troubled at what He has been saying. He tells them He must go and they cannot come. Peter asks Him where He is going and when Jesus tells him he cannot come Peter says I will lay down my life for you. Jesus responds that Peter will deny Jesus three times. The others hearing this must have been challenged as well. Peter to them was the courageous one, he was their leader, if he was to deny Jesus what would they do in these difficult moments that Jesus was describing. Although the apostles had been with Jesus since the beginning of His ministry they still didn’t realize what He has been telling them, or what would happen to Him and to them. Jesus tells them He is going to prepare a place for them. Jesus challenges them (and us) to have faith in Him. As the Father’s Son and perfect envoy, Jesus is absolutely reliable and trustworthy, a faith response to Jesus is a faith response to the Father who sent Him.
We go through our day thinking we are responsible for what we do and accomplish. Jesus’ Word to us is that we should rely on the Father, we should rely on Jesus and we should rely on the Holy Spirit. If we truly have faith we will be able to turn all of our day and actions over to God. We will trust that God will bring the best to our life if we trust Him. This does not mean we will have a life free of suffering or sacrifice, but when these things happen to us they will be moments of growth.
What does your faith in God look like? How can you depend more on God and less on your own devices?
