For one believes with the heart and so is justified, and one confesses with the mouth and so is saved. Romans 10:10 NABRE
Paul writing to the community in Rome discusses the law and righteousness. God made a covenant with the nation of Israel, speaking to them through Moses who established the law. The law creates the template for the people of Israel to follow God and be faithful to Him. God is the one true God who is always faithful to His people. Paul says Moses wrote about righteousness that comes from the law. This word righteousness is interchangeable with justification, and dependent on the one who declares what is right or just. It is used differently in the old and new covenants. For Moses and the old covenant righteousness is defined by the law. The law justifies the individual in God’s eyes. Paul applying righteousness in the new covenant indicates we are right or justified by Christ’s saving action. Paul speaks about Christ coming to fulfill the law and those who believe in Christ are made right. Christ is the word we know with our heart and proclaim with our mouth. When we believe the word in our heart and confess it with our mouth we are righteous, we are justified. Paul’s application of righteous points to salvation, to be righteous is to have life. Paul stresses we must respond, we must believe in our heart and confess with our mouth, a confession of faith. With our response we have life, we are saved.
In the new covenant it is no longer necessary to follow the law, we must confess Christ following his message of love. Love exceeds all the law asks. This new covenant is simpler to understand but more difficult to accomplish. By the grace of God we are righteous and saved.
Do you confess Christ in heart and with your mouth? Are you made righteous?
