the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. John 1:5 NABRE
The Gospel of John is about God, highlighting the relationship between Father and Son, how the Son is the incarnate Word and how they were together from the beginning and will be into eternity. It gives a view of Jesus ministry that is different from the other gospels. It presses the point that Jesus is God. It opens with a prologue seen as a Hymn or Homily. It is poetry which is a profound vision of the Word of God, from a point of view of the Whom that all creation and history exist and has meaning. It is a summary of God’s dealing with the world before and in the incarnation of the Word, Jesus. The quoted verse is part of a section addressing the Word’s activity in creating. All came through Him, what came through Him is life, this life is the light of the human race, the light shines in the dark and the dark cannot overcome the light. John’s gospel uses light symbolism to present Jesus as “the light of the world.” Darkness is the symbol for sin. Sin is separation from God. Darkness, or evil is not an opposite force of God but rather the corruption of something good, or the absence of some goodness. Darkness is always overcome by light, never the other way around. So applying light eliminates corruption and brings back goodness. Jesus is the light that overcomes sin.
It is easy for us to understand the symbolic of darkness being overcome by light because it happens every time we turn on a light in a dark room, or watch the sun rise. We should turn on the light in all aspects of our life, keeping sin from finding dark. It is when we are doing something we don’t want others to see that we fall victim to temptation. Turn on the light of the world.
Do you have dark places in your life? Can you shine light on all you do; reveal yourself completely?
