They roam about as scavengers; if they are not filled, they howl. Psalms 59:16 NABRE
Psalm Fifty-Nine is a plea for help against enemies. In this psalm the psalmist is being unjustly pursued, he has done nothing and he is being harassed. He is being pursued on all sides, no matter where he turns there is an attack. The psalm opens with a cry to God for help and proclaims God as the safe harbor, the protector, the one who will give aid. But there are sections that say the enemy acts like a pack of dogs, roaming loose, scavengers who are starving and howling for something to eat. The psalm is attributed to David and has a title that indicates it was a prayer that was on David’s heart when King Saul, naming David as an enemy, sent men to watch David’s house in order to kill him. It is a prayer for any one of us who feel unjustly threatened or persecuted as a way of seeking God’s assistance or protection. Comparing the psalmist to Jesus it is obviously a psalm much like Jesus’ own life; he is unjustly chased by enemies who want him dead, although he is completely blameless. Jesus too puts all his trust in God and responds with obedience to God’s will. This is a clear example for us, we will be unjustly harassed or become the target of vicious attacks, almost like a loose pack of dogs consumed with finding something to fill themselves and howling at us.
We may feel persecuted, or rather passed over, treated unfairly. This may be something more imagined than actually happens, but no matter, God is the answer. God is the one who can give peace, who can give protection, who will be safety. There is nothing God doesn’t want for us, it is important to ask for help, with a humble heart and sincere persistence.
Do we feel we are being treated unfairly at times? Are we able to remain in God’s presence for help, no matter how we feel attacked?
God is the one who can give peace, who can give protection, who will be safety. There is nothing God doesn’t want for us, it is important to ask for help, with a humble heart and sincere persistence.
