Though my flesh and my heart fail, God is the rock of my heart, my portion forever. Psalms 73:26 NABRE
Psalm 73 begins with the psalmist looking at the prosperity of the wicked and wondering if that is the course to be followed. It seems evil doers have lives that make others envious, they appear to be respected and live in ease. The temptation to be like them is strong. The psalmist wonders if his own upright conduct makes sense. But he goes to the temple to think things out. There he sees that the wicked will be ruined and destroyed and he realizes he was foolish to be envious. He has always been supported by the Lord and will continue to be supported. Those who turn their back on the Lord will perish. His heart is pure and he is blessed, God receives him always. The psalmist knows even though he may die (his flesh and heart fail) God is his foundation, God is the only one that matters. So he will be happy to be with God, confident God will treat him favorably, forever, be it in heaven or on earth. We too may think of shortcuts or easy ways to have more, but is the more we obtain really what we need? If we accumulate without regard for the will of God do we have anything of value? God is the beat of our heart, do we need anything more?
We must guard how we approach gain and achievement. If to gain we must comprise our pure heart, if we must bend just a little to be happy, the cost is too high. Paul speaks about gaining much and not having love and declares that we have gained nothing. (1 Corinthians 13) You can be successful at your job, but if your climb steps on others, then getting to the top is not worth it. How we live relationship is critical to how we are satisfied in life and how we are seen by God.
Are your priorities for success or relationship? Do you stop to lift up others along the way?
We must guard how we approach gain and achievement. If to gain we must comprise our pure heart, if we must bend just a little to be happy, the cost is too high.
