Think of what is above, not of what is on earth. Colossians 3:2 NABRE
This letter to the Colossians points to all that is needed is the gospel of Christ. We desire more in life and that more can be found in knowing Christ and dedicating our lives to the body of Christ, the church. The letter encourages that we live good human relationships which model our relationship with God. It also advises that everything we do be offering to God as honor and praise. Imagine the work of your day is done for God, it is your living prayer. Paul in this letter is addressing a false philosophy that has seduced many members of the Colossian community. After his redress he reminds them they are united to Christ. As Christ died to this world they too have died to this world with Him. They are no longer dominated by its values, influences and agendas. They (we) have been raised with Christ and already share in His divine life benefiting from His glory. The verse quoted reminds us to think of what is above; recall this divine life and share in this glory. Our life is new in Christ and not about where we are, or at what moment in time but about whose we are. Therefore the concerns of this world should not dominate out thinking. This does not mean we don’t care, quite the opposite, we relate to others with purity and selflessness. We model Christ as we are representative of Him who is above.
We should walk each day knowing that we are the only image of Jesus others may see. The early church was formed by people who lived changed lives because they knew Christ was their garment, their character. We live in a post Christian America and therefore the only example of love that many people will see is us. Be selfless, let all you do point to the one from above.
Do people see Jesus when they see you? Are you aware of your own divinity because of your baptism?
