Let us not be conceited, provoking one another, envious of one another. Galatians 5:26 NABRE
Paul speaks of freedom and service as important aspects of the follower of Christ. He also speaks about how to treat one another; we should not provoke one another, or be envious of one another. We should not think of ourselves more than we think of others. Though I feel this is difficult to understand, probably because we think of ourselves ninety-percent of the time. And even with all this self-focus it is in rare moments we have a high opinion of ourselves. When we are envious, aren’t we thinking about what we do not have or cannot do which we see in others? If we are judging and provoking another haven’t, we done the same to ourselves first? Aren’t we on our own backs much more than we are ever on someone else’s back? When we follow Christ, we are to learn we are loved and beautiful. We are everything we are supposed to be, sure we have flaws, but they are insignificant compared to our goodness.
When we are overly proud aren’t we just trying to call attention away from those things we think are insufficient in us? When we are critical or provoking of others, we have already done the same to ourselves. Our journey is to love, God is love, and we desire union with love. Allow yourself to live free, without being on your own back, and walk with joy. Christ is wisdom and the teaching of wisdom is to know you are good, accept and rejoice in your own goodness. Our yearning is for love so love yourself first.
When you judge others have you judged yourself first? Do you know how beautiful you are?
