Say not to your neighbor, “Go, come back tomorrow, and I will give it to you,” when all the while you have it. Proverbs 3:28 NABRE
.
Proverbs is an anthology of collections of sayings and instructions. Proverbs is sophisticated literature by talented writers, winning readers with its compelling portrait of wisdom and inviting them to see life afresh, “wisely,” through its wit, originality, and shrewd observation. Of course many sayings are obviously wise and make sense to follow, but not necessarily easy. This Proverb is an example of generosity and wisdom. It assumes an expectation of giving what you have to a neighbor who asks. There is something about human nature where we think, what is mine is mine and not for you. Therefore a neighbor asking for something is generally met with negative feelings. We have often heard of a neighbor borrowing a cup of sugar in the middle of making a cake, but the Convenience Store has made borrowing sugar a tale from the past.
Imagine if we do depend on one another more, I help you and you help me. There might be neighbors who live in this manner but it seems more common in society that we pay for service and suggest the same for our neighbor. The Proverbs expect generosity, compassion, empathy and an outlook of general good will toward one another. Those who believe in God should still live with these qualities, lending a hand to those in need, counting on circumstances where others will do the same, all through the movement of the Holy Spirit.
When is the last time you felt comfortable enough to ask for help from a neighbor? Are you known for your generosity to others?
