Thus says the LORD: See! I will restore the fortunes of Jacob’s tents, on his dwellings I will have compassion; A city shall be rebuilt upon its own ruins, a citadel restored where it should be. Jeremiah 30:18 NABRE
The Lord will watch the people be exiled, the city of Jerusalem destroyed and a time of isolation and lament all due to their unfaithfulness an infidelity as a nation. But God also speaks of consolation, He speaks of a time when the fortunes will change, they will see compassion, the city rebuilt and the honor of the people restored. God knows there will be difficult times and the people will struggle. Jeremiah has spoken about this being a punishment from God for past infidelities. These punishments are viewed through human thinking and the ways people punish one another. This is projected on to God, the destruction allowed by God from the Babylonians seen as God’s way to demand better behavior and faithfulness from the people. We can read human development in this action. But no matter what happens God is faithful and restores the people. God never forgets them, even the people of the Northern Kingdom are the focus of God’s reconciliation. Though the ten tribes will never be fully reconstituted many will come to Judah and live as God’s chosen people.
God is a lover who consoles, even before the destruction and exile of the people God lets them know they will be restored. Like a parent who corrects a child to help their growth, God loves His people and wants what is best for them. We too may see times when we think God has abandoned us, but God never steps away, it is only we who can separate ourselves from God. If you desire to be close to God you only need to step in His direction and He will greet you with love and consolation.
Do you desire closeness to God? How can you be closer to God daily?
We may think God has abandoned us, but God never steps away, it is only we who can separate ourselves from God. If you desire to be close to God you only need to step in His direction and He will greet you with love and consolation.
