because you will obey the voice of the LORD, your God, keeping the commandments and statutes that are written in this book of the law, when you return to the LORD, your God, with your whole heart and your whole being. Deuteronomy 30:10 NABRE
The Mosaic Law shows the moral path to follow. Its teaching is clear and encouraging yet it does not provide people with the strength to keep the law, only grace from God can. The law is provided to set a guide to how we should live, allowing us to be in a moral place to recognize God’s grace when it is available to us. No matter how we live we must be open to the grace of God, it does no good for God to give us grace if we do not recognize it. When our heart is open by living a moral life then God’s grace will be received and help transform our whole heart and whole being.
Paul asks a question about why the law is given, “Why, then, the law? It was added for transgressions, until the descendant came to whom the promise had been made; it was promulgated by angels at the hand of a mediator.” (Galatians 3:19) If the law does not give life why? Paul says the law serves to show what sin is, it was received through a mediator, not directly from God. But it does not oppose God’s purpose, it carries out its function, so that righteousness comes by faith and promise, not by human works or the law. The descendant Paul mentions is Christ, who lives to provide a witness and to reveal God. Once we know Christ, we are able to understand all needed to receive grace. It is grace that changes us, God acting in our lives. Christ lives to teach us of grace, and to open our hearts to become closer to God on our journey. Don’t think following the law is an end, it is simply a means.
