During those days Mary set out and traveled to the hill country in haste to a town of Judah, Luke 1:39 NABRE
Luke tells the story of Mary and the announcement by an angel of God’s desiring a special commitment from her and the mention of her cousin Elizabeth also pregnant. Elizabeth’s pregnancy is a surprise as she is thought to be barren and so Mary knows it is by special grace she will have a baby. With so much on her mind we see the first actions of Mary is to go to Elizabeth. Mary knows Elizabeth is pregnant, through a miracle. Being with Elizabeth, away from her own people and village will allow Mary to try and understand what is happening to her. Elizabeth being older is likely a person of wisdom and will help Mary and Mary can help Elizabeth who is further along in her pregnancy. Humanity has a natural inclination to be in community when there is change and challenging events coming. So, we read Mary travels to the hill country where Elizabeth lives.
Mary becoming the mother of Jesus is a story told in many ways, and her life events are shared with many facets. She is a virgin, some say perpetually, she is said to be a young teen, she is not yet living in the house of Joseph and so likely will have a scandal associated with her pregnancy and of course Joseph’s reaction can bring disharmony and burden in her life. But all these thoughts are nothing compared to the role of Mary as mother. Some say she replaces Eve as mother of humanity, some have even tried to place her in the role of co-redeemer. But simply she is a mother, like any of our mothers. She has a son she raises, loves and supports and we should look at Mary as mother first, thankful for all motherhood and especially our own mothers, it is never easy.
Where is your mother today? Do you pray for your mother often?
