Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, “Are you discussing with one another what I said, ‘A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me’?” John 16:19 NABRE
Jesus’ shares with His disciples they will not see Him, then see Him again and it confuses them. We understand today He is speaking of the time of His death then resurrection. They will not see Him while in the tomb, a time He is transformed from Jesus to Christ. We hear in creeds it this moment when Christ descends to the dead, bringing all who have died out of the grave with Him. It is an important moment of creation into new life. The disciples are yet to receive the Holy Spirit and do not understand Jesus’ meaning, but they will. Rather than explain to them His meaning Jesus tells them the world will rejoice, they will grieve, but their grief will turn to joy. Jesus’ death is welcomed by those calling for Him to be crucified and the disciples will feel the loss of His presence leaving them wondering how could this happen to Jesus who was able to do everything. Of course, when they meet the Christ in resurrection they rejoice, beginning to understand all He is trying to tell them in this moment.
These words of Jesus are words we should carry with us in life. There will be those we love who we will lose to death, in fact everyone we love will eventually die. Though we don’t expect anyone to rejoice over our loved one’s demise, we certainly will grieve. It is important to grieve, it expresses our love and the missing we have for them. Jesus also tells us to rejoice, because in time we will see them again. Like Jesus they will be transformed and join Christ. Life lives eternal.
Who have you lost to death? What is a good memory of them?
