And he gave him power to exercise judgment, because he is the Son of Man. John 5:27 NABRE
Jesus healing on the Sabbath has caused much controversy and in almost a court room environment the leadership of the temple are accusing Jesus. Jesus speaks to them about His relationship with His Father, which causes even more controversy as they think calling Himself the Son of God is making Himself equal to God. Jesus always points back to the Father as the one who does everything, and because the Father does everything and works constantly, Jesus Himself always works and always does the will of the Father. Jesus includes in His response He has been given the power to exercise judgement because He is the Son of Man. Son of Man is a phrase Jesus refers to Himself often. We have read it in the Hebrew scriptures referring to a son of man appearing on the clouds as one who defeats evil, (see Daniel 7:13-14.) This son of man is viewed as a preexisting heavenly figure who is God’s end-time agent to defeat evil and execute judgement.
Jesus has a view of Himself as the Son of Man because He is born out of humanity. Jesus is God incarnate, and as a human He comes to be the Son of not only God but every human. He is given the power to judge because His humanity allows Him to understand humans completely. When we look at Jesus we see a being who understands our suffering and our seeking of love. These are things Jesus experiences as well. God giving Jesus, the Son of Man, the power to judge assures all of us judged, will receive not a fair judgement but a compassionate, empathic, merciful judgement. Jesus is born out of humanity, He judges as one who understands; trust Him, and live knowing He came for every person.
Can you image Jesus a Son born for you? Do you trust Jesus judgment as someone who lived, suffered and loved as you do?
Jesus is God incarnate, and as a human He comes to be the Son of not only God but every human. He is given the power to judge because His humanity allows Him to understand humans completely.
