Jesus answered him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good but God alone.” Mark 10:18 NABRE
Jesus is approached by a man asking a question, preceding it by calling Jesus “good teacher.” Jesus challenges the man asking why he calls him good, only God is good. A strange question coming from Jesus, certainly Jesus is good. As humans our ego tends to lead us to be a little selfish, a little focused on our own needs before others. But certainly Jesus has no ego and is as good as God, after all He is the Son of God. Jesus wants this man (and us) to think about why we call or think someone is good. Jesus is not indulging in false modesty, He is speaking truth as always. What makes anyone good? God is truly good, and for Jesus He sees Himself in complete union with God. Jesus says the Father and I are one (John 10:30.) Being fully united to God Jesus lives a consciousness fully in the kingdom of God. The kingdom of God is fully God’s sovereign presence. Jesus is in fact good because He is united with God. But He has a problem with the man saying he is good because the man does not understand this unity, and God’s sovereign presence in the kingdom where Jesus is fully immersed.
If we are good it is because we are untied with God. We are living a consciousness of the kingdom of God here and now. Jesus wants us to look deep within ourselves to recognize that in this inner kingdom of God all humans are one, with God and one another. There is no separation between God and each of us and Jesus lives this whole life so we may know it ourselves. Saying someone is good should be us recognizing they are united with God.
Are you good? Do you look within to see the sovereign presence of God?
There is no separation between God and each of us and Jesus lives His whole life so we may know it ourselves. Saying someone is good should be us recognizing they are united with God.
