The Pharisees came forward and began to argue with him, seeking from him a sign from heaven to test him. Mark 8:12 NABRE
After feeding four thousand Jesus and His disciples take a boat to the western shore of the Sea of Galilee. When they arrive Pharisees, religious leaders, approach Him and begin to question Him, even requiring Him to provide a sign as a test, they want proof He truly is from heaven. Jesus responds with emotion, bothered by their request, wondering why they need a sign. Jesus has done many great works; healing, feeding, and preaching with authority. Yet these men of God have no faith. They have been waiting for a Messiah and teaching the people to wait for a Messiah, yet with Jesus presence, many believing Him to be the Messiah, these religious leaders need more and more signs. Jesus is not their kind of Messiah. Mark captures Jesus’ response, there will be no sign given.
We may be like the Pharisees, needing signs and putting Jesus to the test. Jesus in the dessert is confronted by Satan with three temptations all beginning with; “If you are the Son of God …” (see Matthew 4:1-11) Do we need signs, do we ask the “If you are” question, do we require Jesus to perform in a certain way before our faith is secured. We ask for many things, heal a family member, help pass a test, help me succeed, and on and on, we have many needs that we want Jesus to respond positively when we ask. But is it a little like these religious leaders, needing more and more to have proof of Christ’s divinity? If we believe and trust God, then we should believe and trust the best is going to happen. We are loved and blessed always by God. Make your prayer, “I do believe, help my unbelief.”
Do you ask for help in prayer? Are you able to trust God has it all under control?
