Jesus did this as the beginning of his signs in Cana in Galilee and so revealed his glory, and his disciples began to believe in him. John 2:11 NABRE
Jesus performs a miracle, turning water into wine at Cana during a wedding. John calls this the beginning of His signs. John refers to Jesus miracles as signs because these mighty deeds of divine power reveal or point to a spiritual truth about Jesus through observable means. Jesus signs occur within His incarnation. Jesus humanity also reveals His divinity, and His signs reveal His glory through His divinity. Jesus transforming water into wine is fulfilling God’s promises of renewal. The glory of the Lord is revealed on Mount Sinai (Exodus 24:16-17) and the sign at Cana shows the glory of God’s Incarnate Word. Those witnessing the signs, particularly Jesus’ disciples begin to believe in Him. Faith in Jesus goes hand in hand with the revelation of the signs, which reveal a spiritual mystery. They see the Cana miracle as a sign and move beyond their rudimentary faith that has them accepting Jesus’ call to follow. Their faith begins to move to a point of personal commitment. They believe in Jesus and therefore believe all He says and does. Their faith grows slowly but reaches it maturity when it is their turn to perform signs and accept new disciples, which begins after Jesus resurrection and ascension.
We read about the signs of Jesus and the more signs revealed to us, like the disciples, the more faith we are immersed in and the more mature our faith becomes. Like the disciples we are to grow our belief in Jesus and do what they did, perform our own signs and make new disciples. We are to believe in Jesus and all He does and with just a small amount of faith, do the same.
What signs help you believe in Jesus? What are the signs you provide to help others believe?
