who were born not by natural generation nor by human choice nor by a man’s decision but of God. John 1:13 NABRE
John begins his gospel speaking about the Word existing in the beginning, with God and is God. John’s prologue is God becoming incarnate, enlightening the human race. The Incarnate Word came to the Chosen people, those followers of God since the call of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob but they did not accept He is the One. However, those accepting Him become children of God. John also writes those who believe in His name become children of God. John writes this is not our choice, or natural choice it is through the supernatural act of God deciding to send His Incarnate Son. God planned an event changing the direction of the world and inviting all to be children of God. The event of course is the “Word became flesh” (John 1:14.) God speaks His Word and His Word walks among us. John doesn’t tell a Christmas story with a baby born who grows to adulthood leading others to the kingdom of God, rather He gives a behind the scenes look describing, the Word always existed and was with God, the Word created all things and the Word is glorified by God and humanity. The Word we celebrate is Jesus the Christ, living among us, showing the way to the kingdom of God, demonstrating God’s love for all creation, and being a witness to a life of self-giving and care.
We are invited to believe in Jesus and to follow His pattern for life and in so doing we become children of God. Not that we can ever be separated from God, but we are told now we are children of God, not subjects or slaves, but bonafide relations, desired by God to be in communion with Him. John writes this behind the scenes look and we read it on Christmas to be reminded of the direction we are headed.
Do you believe you are a child of God? Can you do anything to separate yourself from God?
The Word we celebrate is Jesus the Christ, living among us, showing the way to the kingdom of God, demonstrating God's love for all creation, and being a witness to a life of self-giving and care.
