And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. Luke 21:27 NABRE
Jesus speaks of the upheaval that will occur with the coming of the end of times. There will be signs that cause people to be perplexed and even die from fright. These events are described in a general way using the imagery of the prophets concerning the heavens, the sun and the moon. Jesus describes what would be His second coming using language from Daniel. Daniel is an unknown author of the Hebrew Scriptures writing what is known as an apocalyptic writing. It is older teaching that points ahead to the coming of the Lord, it has roots in the wisdom tradition. Daniel has the gift of discernment from God who reveals hidden things to His faithful servant. Jesus says, the Son of Man will come in a cloud with power and great glory (see also Daniel 7:13-14.) Jesus tells His disciples when these signs begin to happened stand erect and raise their heads because redemption is at hand.
End times writing has a wide appeal to people, we are always intrigued and look at the world, time, and the future wondering about the end times. Anyone who predicts an end time’s prophecy will gain wide reading. Jesus gives the impression His second coming will occur while His disciples are still living, but He is not trying to provide an end date rather He wants them to be joyful not fearful, like those who will die of fright. Look to His coming with joy and know redemption is at hand. Jesus wants us to know God loves us and will do what is best for us, always. We shouldn’t try to guess the “when” of the end times but be ready to accept it with great joy. Jesus’ presence makes even the end times glorifying!
