Beware that your hearts do not become drowsy from carousing and drunkenness and the anxieties of daily life, and that day catch you by surprise Luke 21:34 NABRE
Jesus declares heaven and earth will pass away but His words will not pass away. Jesus wants those listening to know that His words are more firm than heaven and earth. Jesus wants us to have fidelity, to remain vigilant over the long term, do not become careless as if drunk, keep your minds sharp not filled with daily activities. If doing everyday life is more important to us than remaining present to God and His desire for us, we are lost. There is a concern letting everyday tasks become most important for us, Jesus warns not to let the doing of daily things be more important than God. The coming of the Son of Man and the kingdom of God rushes in a new era which could occur at any time, if we are not ready we may get washed away with the ending of the old era. Jesus desires everyone be ready to move into the kingdom of God, prepared for a life in communion with God. Communion with God requires signs of love, faith moving to knowledge and God’s grace. Jesus indicates this transformation will happen within a generation, forty years from the time of His saying. But Jesus has also told listeners He does not know the time, and we are still waiting. There will be signs and change which we will notice, but we should not depend on signs, we must be aware and constantly focused on a life lived for God.
Doing God’s will prepares us for the coming of the fullness of kingdom of God and is good advice from Jesus. But, doing God’s will is also good for our life. The more we live as though our existence depends on God, the more grace we will receive and live in complete wholeness.
Are you focusing on important things or daily anxieties? How do you train your heart?
