And he asked them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter said to him in reply, “You are the Messiah.” Mark 8:29 NABRE
Jesus has spent a great deal of time with His disciples, taking them around the territory, witnessing His healing, forgiveness and prayer. Now He begins to let them in on why He is here, and His life purpose. Being righteous Jews they understand the Hebrew Scriptures as much as any common person understands and like most Jews they are waiting for a Messiah. Jesus begins His revelation to them with a question, who do you say I am? The gospel has led to this question, who is He? Jesus has appeared in Galilee as an authoritative teacher, He declares Himself bridegroom, Lord, physician and His actions produce awe, amazement and curiosity as well as being met with resistance and misunderstanding. Who Jesus is must be answered by each of us from the depths of our hearts.
Peter offers what might seem obvious to those familiar with Jesus and His message. The word Messiah is Christ, the “anointed one.” Every king was chosen and anointed by God and though there is no king during Jesus time, the promise of a future “anointed one,” particularly one who descends from King David, is anticipated. Many hope for a warrior king as the anointed others hope for a priestly Messiah descended from Aaron, but all expect a new age of peace and prosperity and the end to all war. We can disagree on the type of Messiah Jesus is but there is no doubt His coming changed everything. From one person a movement began that is two billion people strong today. I am not sure we are still following as He led. We should challenge ourselves to determine our best relationship with the “Anointed One.”
Who is Jesus to us today? How do we want to live our lives knowing the “Anointed One?”
