Consecrate them in the truth. Your word is truth. John 17:17 NABRE
Jesus has been teaching His disciples, speaking to them through a long discourse, sometimes referred to as His final discourse. Nearing the end of this teaching Jesus lifts His eyes to heaven and prays on behalf of His disciples. He has taught them all He is able to teach and so asks God, His Father to keep them so they may be one as Jesus and the Father are One. Jesus is returning to His Father and is seeking special protection for His disciples, so they may have joy and overcome the resistance and hatred they will experience. Jesus has a special request to consecrate them in truth. To consecrate is to make something sacred, dedicates for a special purpose. The consecration to truth, Jesus has called Himself truth. In a certain way Jesus is asking that they may be made fully as Him. Consecrating them into truth is asking God to make them fully Jesus, or perhaps Christ and in a particular way, to be made the word. John opens His gospel saying “and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” (John 1:1) We understand that the Word of God becomes incarnational. Now I imagine Jesus asking God to make those who are incarnational, His disciples, into the word. Jesus is Truth, Word and human, his disciples who are human are consecrated to become truth and the word. Jesus and the Father are in a divine communion, through consecration Jesus is asking God to invite His disciples into this communion. They will need this blessing, the unity with the divine and soon the power of the Holy Spirit.
For us knowing that the disciples can be consecrated to truth means the possibility for our consecration is possible as well. We too can be made sacred, joined with the divine and become witnesses to truth and the word.
Do you seek unity with the divine? Do you desire consecration with truth?
