For the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have come to believe that I came from God. John 16:27 NABRE
An important aspect of Jesus’ mission, is to tell people about God. Those who know God to this point think of Him as a being of wrath, judging and punishing for every broken rule or disobedience. Much of God’s communication with the Hebrews has been about salvation and rescue. However the prophets often warn of God’s potential wrath, thus it becomes common to view God as a judge. Jesus changes our impression of God. Jesus shares about a Father who loves, who creates and loves His children even when they are disobedient, selfish and self-centered. Jesus informs God is our Father and His Father who loves and supports His children. We see Jesus saying the Father Himself loves the disciples, because they believe. But it is more than that, our Father loves each of us when we do and do not believe. Our Father continuously loves us, faithful or not, God has faith in us. I believe God has hope in us, as well. Knowing God sees outcomes yet hopes for our right choices, and our following His will. Jesus shedding light on God changes not only His disciples but we today look to God not as a judge but as one who loves. We declare God is love. There is no need to fear a harsh judge, we know the one who loves us seeks our good and peace.
Jesus changed our impression, pointing us to God who loves is a major change we recognize reading through the Hebrew Scriptures, the Gospels, to the teachings we have today. We should know we are loved by the creator of the universe, a Father who is our creator, creating us to love us. Though human fathers may fail, God is a perfect loving Father.
Do you know your Father loves you? What do you do for love?
