Jesus answered and said to them, “Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up.” John 2:19 NABRE
Jesus finds a market place in the temple which upsets Him and He physically removes those selling and changing money, demanding His Father’s house not be a marketplace. The Jews in the temple want a sign allowing His actions. Jesus responds to them, if they destroy the temple He will raise it up in three days. Jesus words and deeds in the temple recall the prophet Jeremiah, who threatened destruction of the temple if the people did not reform their ways and deeds (see Jeremiah 7:1-15.) For the Jews the temple is where God dwells, so they would go to the temple to be with God. Jesus by declaring He would restore the temple in three days was saying that God dwells in Him, He is the incarnate Word, the new dwelling of God in the world, the divine Word who made His dwelling among us. The bodily resurrection of Jesus, after three days with be the sign that provides confirmation for all Jesus has said and done, the Father dwells in Jesus. Jesus comes to light as the center of worship and sacrifice, the New Covenant. After returning to the Father, Jesus sends the Holy Spirit so God may dwell within each of us. We no longer need a temple to visit God we can turn inward and find God in us.
Do you need sacred and special places to find God? Are you able to see God in others, the Spirit dwelling within those who follow Jesus and are witnesses to the message of Jesus. Jesus’ resurrection turns us away from looking for God in a specific place and looking for God within us. All our ways and deeds should reflect God shinning out from us. Being the light of Christ we become where others meet God.
Do you seek God within you? Do not seek God exteriorly, God no longer dwells in a building.
Jesus' resurrection turns us away from looking for God in a specific place and looking for God within us. All our ways and deeds should reflect God making us the light of Christ, becoming where others meet God.
